MUMBAI, Sept 4 (Reuters) - A fire on an Air India [AI.U]> flight with 228 on board was extinguished on Friday and all passengers safely evacuated, a spokesman for Mumbai airport said.

The Boeing 747 flight was bound for Riyadh from Mumbai, India's busiest airport.

"One of the engines caught fire while the aircraft was taxiing to the runway. Passengers were evacuated via slides," said the spokesman, Manish Kalghatgi.

There were 213 passengers and 15 crew aboard, said a spokeswoman for Air India, the national carrier. The cause of the fire was being investigated, she said. (Reporting by Rina Chandran; Editing by Krittivas Mukherjee).
