Mad Men Season 3 Episode 6: Guy Walks into an Advertising Agency

America may have won their independence from Britain before the turn of the 19th Century, but Sterling Cooper is most definitely under British rule.

In Mad Men Season 3 Episode 6, “Guy Walks into an Advertising Agency,” Sterling Cooper will get a surprise visit from the Director and Chairman of the Board of Putnam, Powell and Lowe. The visit does more than surprise the team at Sterling Cooper; it forces them to work on their Independence holiday. Is nothing sacred?

Now that Don Draper is three children deep into his marriage, fans will be wondering how long he will remain faithful to Betty. During Episode 5, “The Fog,” Don met a prison warden, while waiting for his Betty to deliver their baby. The scene was more than your ordinary interaction between guys in a waiting area. In a drunken dialogue, the warden discusses his potential to not be a good father. Each point he makes, from bringing the stress of work home to not being there for his child, is a mirror reflection of Don Draper. But, in typical Mad Men fashion, Don, the introvert, doesn’t discuss how he feels. We only see Darper’s internalization of the “parenting” subject in Don’s expression – which Jon Hamm is always brilliant at portraying. The scene had ended with prison warden calling the newborn a “fresh start.” The scene ended leaving Don with a feeling as though he was visited by his guardian angel. Coincidentally, just before Betty went into labor, Don got a call from Sally’s teacher who was obviously interested in Don earning some extra-credit. He could have told Betty she called, but instead chose to lie.

Herman “Duck” Phillips (Mark Moses) is back in the picture. After, Duck’s Season 2 outburst, he has moved on to Gray. Duck looks to woo Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) and Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) from Sterling Cooper. Although, Peggy is visibly considering the change for a pay scale upgrade, Pete appears to be more recalcitrant about leaving Sterling Cooper. However, working in the shadow of Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton) and a recent chastising from Roger Sterling may have Pete reconsidering the possibility of a Gray future.

What else can we expect from Mad Men? Tonight heralds the 2009 Emmy Awards, and “Mad Men” has earned itself 16 nominations. Both Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss received nominations
