Drink Of The Week: Autumn Sidecar

By AskMen.com Editors

A little history with your buzz...
The first sidecar cocktail was made in the early part of the 20th century in Europe (possibly at Harry's Bar in Paris, possibly elsewhere) and was made with cognac, orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier, Cointreau or triple sec) and some lemon juice. It's been enjoying something of a renaissance along with the resurgence of cocktail mixology, and here's a variation on the classic made with wine. Wine seems like a reasonable addition considering its cold outside, you may be serving multitudes during the holidays and wine is a more affordable alternative to liquor; and finally -- it tastes good.

Hair-on-your-chest factor: 43/100
While this isn't going to necessarily win over every guy you'll encounter, we gave it a shot and came up aces. Man up and mix a batch for your buddies.

Instructions:
1 1/2 oz Yellow Tail chardonnay
1/2 oz brandy
Splash of agave nectar or simple syrup
2 slices of orange
2 fresh basil leaves
Float of Grand Marnier

In the bottom of a mixing glass, muddle the orange slices, agave nectar and basil leaves. Add ice, chardonnay and brandy. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Float Grand Marnier, garnish with an orange twist.
