The Best Treatments for Dealing with Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disease that usually contains raised, red patches covered with a build-up of dead skin cells. Psoriasis can affect different areas of the body. Choosing a psoriasis treatment can be difficult, as people react differently to different treatments. While choosing a treatment, it is important to consult your doctor and to discuss your psoriasis symptoms. Specific psoriasis conditions (like scalp psoriasis, genital psoriasis or pustular psoriasis) may require different treatment.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin disease that usually contains raised, red patches covered with a build-up of dead skin cells. There are different forms of psoriasis (including plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic). Psoriasis can also affect different areas of the body (including scalp psoriasis, genital psoriasis, psoriasis on the face, psoriasis on the hands and feet and psoriasis of the nails).

Usually people have only one type of psoriasis at a time. Sometimes psoriasis can change from one form of psoriasis to another. It is most likely to appear on the scalp, knees, elbows or torso, but it can develop anywhere on the body. Psoriasis is not infectious and cannot be caught from another person.

People suffering from psoriasis may develop psoriatic arthritis. It is similar to rheumatoid arthritis, but not as severe. It may affect the fingers, toes, neck, lower back, knees and ankles. In severe cases, it can cause irreversible damage to joints.

SCALP PSORIASIS

About fifty percent of people suffering from psoriasis develop scalp psoriasis. Scalp psoriasis is caused by the body producing too many skin cells on the scalp, resulting in red lesions covered with a white scale (made up of dead skin cells). In extreme cases of scalp psoriasis, thick plaques can cover the scalp and cause hair loss.

What Causes Psoriasis?

The exact cause of psoriasis is not known, but it is believed to be a genetic condition. It seems that the immune system speeds up the growth of new skin cells, so that the skin cells pile up. Often, there is something that triggers the immune system to act in this way and the resulting psoriasis. Some of the triggers that can cause psoriasis are:
  • Stress;
  • Injury to the skin;
  • Infection;
  • Reaction to drugs;
  • Vaccinations;
  • Sunburn;
  • Scratches;
  • Weather;
  • Diet;
  • Allergies.

Symptoms of Psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis. People suffering from plaque psoriasis will develop 'lesions' on their skin, which are covered by a white scale (from dead skin cells). The skin will also be itchy.

Remedies

Treatment for psoriasis depends on the type of psoriasis you are suffering from and the psoriasis treatment that works best for you. Discuss any treatment with your doctor or skin specialist.

RELIEVING THE ITCH

One of the most uncomfortable things about psoriasis is the associated itchiness. Cool water can help relief this itchiness. Try a wet towel, a cold shower, a cold bath or a cold pack. Many of the medication and natural treatments mentioned below will also help combat the itchiness.

NATURAL REMEDIES

When considering treatment for psoriasis, it may be beneficial to know some of the natural treatments that are available. Although none of these treatments will cure psoriasis, they may relieve the symptoms and itchiness and help prevent further outbreaks from occurring. All natural treatments should be discussed with your doctor, as it may affect any psoriasis treatment he or she prescribes.
  • Baths can be beneficial by themselves in relieving itchiness. Oatmeal, Epsom salts and Dead Sea salts can help remove the scales and also help in soothing itchiness.
  • Aloe Vera is often used to soothe and moisturize skin.
  • Apple cider vinegar can be used to soothe the skin. You may also add it to a bath.
  • Capsaicin is found in cayenne peppers. It can help treat red, scaly and itchy skin.
  • Evening primrose oil can be found in cream or lotion form. It can also be taken as a nutritional supplement.
  • Tea tree can be applied to the skin or added to baths.
  • Fish oil, taken as a supplement, can help improve the symptoms associated with psoriasis.
  • Milk thistle can be purchased in tablet or fluid form. It helps stop T-cell activation.
  • Turmeric can help relieve psoriatic arthritis.

Water and Skin Care

Water and Skin Care

Water plays a big relation in taking care of your skin. Have you ever wondered why does water wrinkle your skin? This is because water has certain elements that react to human skin. You might have heard a number of skincare experts saying that drinking water for your skin would help a lot. Quite true. Water is indeed vital to a beautiful skin. And much of it is because of the very nature of water.

The Nature of Water

Water primarily stimulates the circulation of blood, fluids, and the necessary elements inside our body. Additionally, it also controls and regulates the skin's natural balance. When water is warm, it has the power to hydrate, revitalize, detoxify, and oxygenate the skin. Warm water also gets rid of blackheads and makes large pores smaller. Drinking water makes the body more relaxed and invigorated. It also replaces the moisture lost due to everyday activities. Simply put, these are all the benefits of drinking water for skin.

Why Does Water Wrinkle Your Skin?

Staying underwater or soaked in a bathtub too much causes your skin to wrinkle. It is because the water washes off the sebum, an oily substance produced in the epidermis, which in turn, is the outer layer of the skin. Sebum actually blocks water from entering the skin. But it is washed off when you stay in the water too much and then absorbing water through skin starts. Without sebum, water penetrates the skin causing it to swell. The tip of the fingers and toes are the ones most affected. And it is because these parts of the skin hold water and sebum is abundant there too. But then again, once the absorbed water evaporates, the skin that has been wrinkled by water goes back to its normal form. So the wrinkles to the skin caused by water is really not something to worry about.

The Role of Water in Skin Care

Water keeps the skin hydrated.
Our skin is comprised of 90% water. And so without the right amount of water to keep that level, the skin tends to be unhealthy and dry. In fact, dehydration does not affect the skin alone, but the rest of the body as well, including the vital organs like kidneys and lungs.

Skin Allergy

Skin Allergy Treatment

Symptoms of Skin Allergies

People suffering from skin allergies may experience the following symptoms during an allergy attack:
  • Skin rashes
  • Blisters on the skin
  • A sudden immobility (only in rare cases of extreme allergies of the skin)
  • Scaling of the skin
  • Hives (a rash looking like raised welts on the skin that itch and occur in batches
The symptoms are mostly experienced on the hands as they get in contact with items and substances all day long, during work or at home.

Types of Skin Allergies

The term eczema is sometimes interchanged with another skin allergy condition; dermatitis. Eczema is actually an advanced type of dermatitis with more serious results.

Allergic contact dermatitis
This skin allergy rash occurs when the skin touches an object or substance that it is allergic to. The symptom (a rash or itch) usually occurs within 30 minutes after touching the object. Inflammation of the skin can occur and the skin must not be scratched or covered with anything when this happens.

Eczema
This is a skin condition causing a red rash and itching on the skin. Eczema skin symptoms can cause a lot of discomfort and the disease is most likely to affect children. Eczema affects approximately seven in a thousand people and most of these patients are children aged between two months and five years old.

Eczema is a form of dermatitis in an advanced stage and can cause blisters and scabs and oozing liquid from the skin. A cure for eczema must be determined by a doctor and experimenting with over the counter treatments that offer relief is not advised when the condition has been diagnosed, especially not with children. Conventional allergy therapies seem to have no to little effect on eczema.
Hives
Skin hives are a type of skin rash that is usually harmless. Caused most of the time by an allergy this rash looks like circular raised welts on the skin that can go red and itchy. The hives will show up in batches and can appear all over the body. Hives can be different in size, ranging from very small to a few centimetres in diameter.

Diagnosis of Skin Allergies
Skin allergies are usually diagnosed by checking for skin rashes, the appearance of skin infection and itchy skin on the usual areas of the skin being mainly the face and chest but possibly also other areas. The doctor will probably check your family history with you to find out if any other relatives have the same problems. He will also review the following with you:
  • Your diet, to make sure that there are no food allergies involved.
  • Allergic tendencies (do you have more sensitive or allergic reactions).
  • Prescribed drug intake that may affect the skin.
The doctor might decide to perform a blood test for skin condition called a radioallergosorbent test (RAST. A small amount of your blood is taken after which the blood is mixed with the suspected allergen. Antibodies developing in the blood are a sign of a skin allergy.

To further determine your diagnosis a skin lesion biopsy might also be performed during which a small piece of skin is removed and examined in a laboratory, where it is tested for symptoms of skin allergies.

Rough Skin Tips

How to Deal with Rough Skin

acnecareEveryone wants to have a smooth and a soft skin, not one that is hard, rough and dry. However, to attain perfect skin, you needproper skin care. In addition, every individual has different skin type as some people’s skin is naturally soft while others are not so fortunate and have dry, rough and scaly skin.

There are various factors that can lead to rough anddry skin. These include dry environmental conditions, low humidity, improper diet and dehydration. Usually, rough skin is found on heels and elbows. This article will provide some tips on ways you can effectively deal with rough skin.

To begin with, protect your skin from environmental conditions. Do not expose your skin to either direct sunlight or to harsh cold winds. Also, avoid use of heaters as they can sap away the moisture from your skin, making it dry and rough. If you are using heaters, then you must use a humidifier.

Have a well balanced diet as the health of your skin is largely dependent on what you eat. If you have dry and rough skin, then it is imperative to have plenty of water so that you keep your skin well hydrated.

Moisturizing your skin daily can help in making it naturally soft and supple. Similarly, if you suffer from rough heels and elbows, then you should take special care of such regions.

Soak your heels in warm water as that will help. Similarly, apply moisturizing lotion on your skin to overcome dryness and roughness. Cocoa butter, petroleum gel and coconut oil are extremely beneficial.

You should apply cream on dry and rough parts of your skin at night, especially your heel and elbows, and then cover the region with socks. Your skin will feel smoother and softer in the morning.

Thus follow the above given tips to effectively deal with rough and dry skin.

Cracked Skin Treatment

Cracked Skin on fingers

Nobody knows exactly why some people are affected by these rashes and others with the same exposure aren’t. Those with atopic dermatitis often have non-skin allergies (like hay fever and asthma) but their rashes aren’t caused by skin allergies. On the other hand, those with contact dermatitis do have true skin allergies, but usually not other allergic problems like someone with atopic dermatitis. Contact dermatitis occurs at all ages, whereas atopic dermatitis is most often a problem in kids. Hand dermatitis is caused by skin irritants such as detergents or chemicals. Dry (chapped) skin occurs because of lack of water in the stratum corneum (see diagram). If your skin surface doesn’t have enough oil, there’s more evaporation of water which contributes to the dryness.

Scratching can actually trigger eczematous rashes. Initial mild itching makes you want to scratch, of course. But scratching damages the skin, worsens inflammation, irritates surface nerves, and leads to even more intense itching than you had before. This cycle aggravates and prolongs all of these rashes. In fact some eczematous rashes completely disappear without any treatment if you just stop scratching.

As you can tell, these rashes differ in many ways. So why do we lump them together? Because the underlying chronic inflammation makes them all look, feel and respond to treatment in the same ways.

Cracked Fingertips Treatment

For an effective treatment of dry and cracked fingertips, it is essential to keep your skin well-hydrated and moisturized. You can use petroleum jelly or vitamin E oil to keep the skin of your hand, especially around the fingers soft and moisturized. Vitamin E is an excellent cracked fingertips remedy. With regular application, the dry and cracked areas will soften and heal quickly. Along with petroleum jelly and vitamin E oil, you can use calamine lotion as well. It would help to sooth the skin. At the same time, reduce the exposure to harsh chemicals or soaps and detergents.

Make sure that you moisturize your hands every time after washing and also before going to bed. For cleaning your hands, use only a mild soap and slightly warm water. In the night, keep your hand covered in hand gloves, after properly moisturizing them. The skin care products that contain salicylic acid can help immensely to exfoliate the dry and thick skin around the fingertips. Even skin care products with alpha hydroxy acids can work well for dry fingertips. Otherwise, you can use almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil, flax oil and jojoba oil, which are also some of the effective cracked fingertips cures.

However, if cracked fingertips are caused by fungal infection, then it would require application of anti-fungal creams and ointments. You should better talk to your physician to find out an effective anti-fungal cream. Application of tea tree oil, which has anti-fungal properties can help to prevent the spread of fungal infection to other areas. Dry and scaly fingertips caused by eczema, on the other hand, can be treated with topical steroid creams. Again, it is better to have a talk with your physician and find out whether cracked fingertips are actually caused by eczema or some any other condition. Once, eczema is confirmed, your health care provider would suggest the appropriate medications.

Once, your cracked fingertips have healed completely, it is time to follow some preventive measures to avoid future recurrences. So, protect your hands from irritants, harsh chemicals, detergents and soaps by wearing a pair of hand gloves, while washing dishes, cleaning any household item or working in the garden. Limit the use of soaps, and moisturize your hand after washing it, especially during the winter days. However, if your fingertips are constantly dry and cracked, and have not healed even after taking all possible care and precautions, then consider a visit to your health care provider. Such a condition needs to be properly evaluated to rule out the possibility of dermatitis, eczema and fungal infection.
