Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole's horror as tourist, 17, dies after 'drug collapse' in top London club

A 17-year-old tourist died early today after partying in London's Whisky Mist nightclub, where Wayne Rooney was celebrating being named Player of the Year.

The teenager from Lisbon, Portugal, collapsed in the club at approximately 1.20am.

He was then taken to a central London hospital where he later died.

Another man was arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs.

A team of paramedics battled to save the clubber's life as he lay on the pavement outside the nightclub. This morning the club was still cordoned off as police carried out further inquiries.

The player looked baffled by the commotion outside the club as he left but his spokesman claimed the footballer was 'unaware of any incident having taken place'.

The spokesman added: 'As Wayne was leaving the club he was asked - as were all other guests - whether he had seen anything.

'He simply told police that he had seen nothing and was not aware of any incident.'

The man, whose identity has been obscured for legal reasons, is handcuffed and put into the back of a police van


The club is the latest venture by the owners of London nightclub Mahiki which, with the help of club promoter Guy Pelly, regularly attracts the likes of Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Owners Piers Adam and Nick House, Geri Halliwell's ex, have previously said their plan was to attract 'private bankers who live in Kensington and St John's Wood' rather than socialites.

At its opening, Mr House said: 'Whisky Mist will be highly aspirational, and a bit more serious than Mahiki.

'It's not going to be a young place, the clientele will be 40-year-old guys. The market we're going for is very international.'

Earlier in the evening, Wayne Rooney had been named the PFA's Player of the Year and gave England coach Fabio Capello a boost by declaring he will be fit for the World Cup, despite suffering a groin injury

Rooney said last night: 'The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that.

'I'm hoping to play for United in the last game of the season.'

Ashley Cole was relaxing in the club last night after playing his first game for Chelsea since breaking his ankle in February.
