17 crushed to death and at least 80 injured after mass panic at Germany's Love Parade

By Christopher Leake

Death toll: Seventeen people died in a tunnel in the city of Duisburg, Germany after a crush in this tunnel at the Love Parade festival

Crush began after 'police tried to restrict access to area'

Revellers attempted to climb walls to escape scene

At least 80 others injured, 20 in serious condition

Seventeen people were killed and 80 injured last night when mass panic broke out at a German music festival.

The victims were crushed and emergency workers had trouble getting through to them after a stampede during the annual Love Parade techno music festival in the city of Duisburg, attended by up to 1.4million people.

Witnesses described piles of bodies stacked on top of each other and revellers climbing walls to escape the crush.

Many were pinned shoulder to shoulder in the tunnel and unable to move. People standing on the motorway bridge above the scene could only watch helpless as at least 15 were crushed to death.

Duisburg police director Ralf Klauckmass said there had been ‘mass panic’.

The stampede broke out after authorities tried to stop thousands from entering the area where the parade was being held in the grounds of an old freight depot.

Police said that of the 80 people who were hurt, at least 20 were severely injured.

Foreign Office officials said it was not known last night if any Britons were among the dead at the popular festival north of Dusseldorf. But it is thought large numbers of British fans were in the audience.

Desperate: Revellers clung on to stairs and tried to climb walls to escape the crush which began after thousands entered the tunnel

Eyewitnesses told last night of the stampede. ‘It was hell,’ said Karl Lowenstein, 21, who was in the tunnel. ‘It was dark and it was full. Something happened – whether someone tripped or someone fell I don’t know.

'But there was a stampede to get to the other end and those who fell, well, many of them never got up again.’

Kevin Krausgartner, 21, said: ‘I have never seen anything like it. I saw 25 people piled on top
of one another in a huge heap. I cried.

‘People couldn’t get any air. I saw the dead there. One person was completely pale and I wanted to give him some water, but a medic said that wouldn’t help him – he was gone. I saw police on the bridge just standing there. They didn’t do anything.’

Horrific: Two bodies lie covered by blankets at the entrance to the tunnel on the industrial estate

Emergency: Police run to the scene of the crush but there was little that could be done for some victims

'There was no escape,' one Love Parade participant named Marius told the Bild.de website. 'People were pressed into the wall. I was afraid I'd die.'

One woman raver told Bild: 'I was lucky. I found a hole to escape through but two women were killed right next to me.'

Another man described trying to give one of the injured water to be told by a rescue worker 'don't bother with him, he's dead.'

One woman said getting through the tunnel as 'trying to pass through the eye of a needle.'

'The tunnel was too narrow to cope with the number of people taking the short-cut and should have been closed by crowd controllers before the parade even began,' she said.

Emergency services tend to the injured: 'In the tunnel people couldn't move - they couldn't go backwards or forwards and that's when the panic broke out'

Police and ambulance workers were later seen giving the kiss of life to victims.
Many people continued partying as the air was filled with the noise of emergency sirens, unaware of the tragedy taking place.

Rescue squads had to fight their way through an ocean of people but ten other victims were resuscitated.

A state of emergency was declared in the city last night. Although more than 1,200 police officers were on duty, they said they were powerless to prevent the tragedy.

A police spokesman said: ‘It is a catastrophe that we are struggling to cope with.’

Police commissioner Jurgen Kieskemper said: ‘The situation is chaotic.’ He later added it was a ‘miracle’ that the number of wounded was ‘quite low’.

Another witness, named as Fabio, claimed he tried to warn police before the stampede that trouble was brewing.

‘A friend and I got out as hundreds more poured in,’ he said. ‘We tried to tell the police to close it down but they didn’t listen. This was 45 minutes before people were killed.’

People had been using the tunnel as a short-cut on the Love Parade, which consisted of 15 floats which set off at 2pm.

Despite the scale of the tragedy unfolding at the entrance to a former freight rail station, the one-day techno festival continued as planned.

Organisers feared cancelling the event would only cause a second panic.

Over 1.5 million revellers had gathered for the annual techno music festival in Duisburg, which is near Dusseldorf.

Popular: Around 1.5million people were attending this year's Love Parade which used to be held in Berlin

It had emerged that police had warned Love Parade organisers that there would be problems with crowd control if this year's event was held in the city centre.

Instead, the festival was moved a mile out of Duisburg to a less enclosed area. But the decision appears to have backfired.

They told revellers over loudspeakers to turn around and walk back in the direction they had come from before the panic broke out, he said.

Meanwhile other revellers, still oblivious to the tragic events unfolding in another part of the parade, continue to party.

The Love Parade was once an institution in Berlin, but has been held in the industrial Ruhr region of western Germany since 2007.

The original Berlin Love Parade grew from a 1989 peace demonstration into a huge outdoor celebration of club culture that drew about 1.5 million people at its peak in 1999.

But it suffered from financial problems and tensions with city officials in later years, and eventually moved.

It's the hotpants brigade! Emma Watson, Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof battle it out to be style queen of Glastonbury in tiny shorts

By Mail Online Reporter

It's one of the most famous music events in the world.

But Glastonbury turned into a bit of a fashion contest today, as Emma Watson, Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof all battled it out to be the style queen of the 2010 festival.

The trio all arrived at the event in Somerset wearing similar outfits of tiny hotpants and boots.

While Watson opted for a khaki-print Louis Vuitton corset, denim shorts and spiked wellies, Moss, 36, went for denim hotpants, fishnet tights, a black vest top and a wax jacket - the most-desired festival fashion item du jour.

Meanwhile, Geldof, 19, decided to go for an all-black outfit in black shorts, a black T-shirt and lace jacket, complete with black socks and boots.

Watson and Moss both arrived at the festival with their respective boyfriends, model George Craig and musician Jamie Hince, looking happy and relaxed.

Model and musician Craig, 19, was first spotted with the actress when they saw the London production of War Horse earlier this month.

Writing on his Twitter at the time, he said: 'Heading to London this afternoon, going to the theatre tonight with a wonderful lady.'

Clearly enjoying the atmosphere at Pilton farm, Emma sat backstage and allowed a friend to apply a fake tattoo.

The transfer said 'mother lover' with a picture of two birds around it.

Australian singer/artist Rolf Harris kicked off the live music on the Pyramid Stage at 11am this morning, whipping the crowd into a frenzy with his classic Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport.

Thousands of people gathered in the sunshine to listen to the 80-year-old veteran sing a collection of songs.

Throughout the day, musical acts including Willie Nelson, Dizzee Rascal and Snoop Dogg all roused the crowds with their performances.

Other celebrities expected to attend the Festival as guests rather than performers include Kelly Osbourne and Kate Hudson.

Hollywood star Hudson is expected to attend the event with new boyfriend, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, who is performing later this weekend.

Among the huge names performing over the weekend includes Shakira, Stevie Wonder, Norah Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Groove Armada and Scissor Sisters.

Kylie Minogue is set to make her Glastonbury debut after her breast cancer battle forced to pull out of her headlining act five years ago.

Unlike previous soggy Glastonburys, this year is predicted to be the warmest in years as temperatures are expected to soar up to 30 degrees on Sunday.

Since the festival started yesterday, medical staff have already treated about 1180 people, mostly for heat-related illnesses.

Carnival queen Jennifer Lopez brings the streets of New York to a standstill as she leads Puerto Rican parade

By Daily Mail Reporter

National pride: Parade king Marc Anthony and his wife Jennifer Lopez make their way up Fifth Avenue during the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York

Jennifer Lopez has always been proud of her Puerto Rican heritage.

So Hollywood's most successful Latin American superstar couldn't have been prouder as she led a parade through the streets of New York on Puerto Rica day.

The 40-year-old waved her parents national flag with undisguised pride as she and husband Marc Anthony rode in the back seat of a limousine.

Revellers spilled out onto the streets to photograph the couple, blocking the roads.
Jennifer, the mother of twins, showed off her slim figure in a strapless white dress.

Underneath she wore a black bra. While an unusual look, the bra prevented her from any accidental flashes of flesh due to her energetic waving.

Anthony wore a sash declaring him King Of the Parade.

Like his wife the singer/songwriter is the son of Puerto Rican immigrants.

Jennifer grew up in the Bronx with her parents Guadalupe (née Rodríguez), a kindergarten teacher, and David Lopez, a computer specialist, who were both born in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Anthony was also born in New York, to Guillermina, a housewife, and Felipe Muñiz, a musician and hospital lunchroom worker.

Last week Jennifer stole the show at the MTV Movie Awards with her hip-hop dance with actor Tom Cruise.

She gushed about the experience.

'I'm such a hard worker, and I'm kind of intense about my job. It's great to work with someone who is just as intense and passionate and crazy about getting everything right, she said.

'[Cruise] called me a month before and said, "I have this idea. I'm doing this thing for the MTV Movie Awards, and I want it to be a surprise",' she told Extra.

Cruise performed in character as Les Grossman.

'The thing with that routine is that it is one of the hardest routines. But he did it. He really, really did it.

'And he did a great job. I was really proud of him.

Lopez also denied reports that she and Anthony had renewed their wedding vows.
'We didn't. This is an absolute lie,' The Back-Up Plan star said.

'We just had our anniversary and had some people over to the house.'

'Maybe we will one day...' she added.

No stopping them: After their convertible car broke down the two just swapped to a golf buggy

Hello tiger! Chinese celebrations go off with a bang to welcome Lunar New Year

Monkey business: Animals performing at a temple in Beijing as part of the New Year celebrations

When it comes to putting on a show, China always takes the bull by the horns.
But in this case, it’s a monkey and a sheep.

The animals were performing as part of the country’s Lunar New Year celebrations, marking the beginning of the Year Of The Tiger tomorrow.

They were featured in a spectacular show highlighting the skills of animals appearing in the Chinese zodiac which was held in a temple in Beijing.

Hour-long firework displays, glittering processions, traditional displays and historical dances formed just part of the celebrations for the most important event in the Chinese calendar.

Beijing and Shanghai reverberated with chaotic, ad hoc firework displays as midnight approached.

While countries across the world - including the UK, Spain and Malaysia - put on colourful celebrations to welcome the New Year, also know as Spring Festival.

Airports and transport networks overflowed as tens of millions of people headed home to China to be with their families for the start of the holiday.

An estimated 210 million people – more than the population of Russia – are expected to use the railways during the 40-day New Year travel season, up 10 per cent from last year.

The holiday officially lasts six days, but many workers take up to a month off.
Firecrackers are believed to scare off evil spirits and entice the god of wealth to people's doorsteps once New Year's Day arrives.

Celebrations will carry on into the early hours of Sunday, officially the first day of the new year.

Police around the country tightened security for the holiday period. A notice on the Ministry of Public Security website said police would increase checks on fireworks displays, lantern shows and temple fairs.

Last year, an illegal fireworks display at the headquarters of China's state broadcaster in Beijing caused a massive fire at a newly built 44-storey hotel.

On Friday, three firefighters died while fighting a building fire triggered by fireworks in central Hunan province, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao warned his people to keep a ‘sober mind’ about the challenges ahead.

He said: ‘In 2010, China will face a more complicated situation, both at home and abroad’.

People must ‘keep a sober mind and an enhanced sense of anxiety about lagging behind,’ he added

Priority should be given to ‘persistence in taking economic development as the central task, forcefully promoting reform and opening up ... and doing a better job responding to the global financial crisis, in order to keep steady and relatively fast economic development’.

President Hu Jintao spent Friday visiting Taiwanese investors in the south-eastern province of Fujian.

Taiwanese have invested billions of dollars in China since detente began between the two sides in the 1980s, lured by a common culture and language.

China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since a civil war ended with Communist victory in 1949.
